If you'd asked most people in 2017 what blockchain was going to change, you'd probably have heard the same answers.
Banks.
Money.
Governments.
Perhaps the occasional prediction that Bitcoin would replace the pound by Christmas.
Nearly a decade later, none of that happened. At least, not in the way many expected.
You still buy your coffee with a contactless card. Your salary still arrives through the banking system. Most people couldn't tell you the difference between Ethereum and Solana, and quite frankly, many don't need to.
It's easy to look at that and conclude that crypto was overhyped.
I think that's the wrong conclusion.
Crypto hasn't disappeared. It has simply stopped behaving like a consumer technology and started behaving like infrastructure.
Ironically, that's often how genuinely transformative technologies mature.
Nobody gets excited about TCP/IP anymore. Nobody writes breathless headlines about DNS. Cloud computing barely makes the news unless something catches fire.
Yet remove any of those technologies and modern society grinds to a halt.
I increasingly suspect blockchain is heading in the same direction.
Not because everyone will own Bitcoin.
Because most people won't even realise they're using blockchain at all.
We Asked the Wrong Question
For years, the debate around crypto revolved around a single idea.
"Will it replace traditional finance?"
That question dominated conferences, investment reports and enough social media arguments to last several lifetimes.
The trouble is, it's a rather binary way of looking at technological change.
History rarely works like that.
The internet didn't replace television.
Cloud computing didn't eliminate data centres.
Streaming didn't completely kill physical media.
New technologies have an awkward habit of integrating with the old rather than replacing it overnight.
Crypto appears to be following exactly the same path.
Instead of overthrowing banks, banks have quietly started adopting blockchain technologies themselves.
Instead of bypassing regulators, the industry is increasingly operating within regulatory frameworks.
Instead of replacing financial infrastructure, it's gradually becoming part of it.
That's a much less exciting headline.
It's also a far more believable future.
The Quiet Rise of Stablecoins
If there's one area that demonstrates this shift, it's stablecoins.
A few years ago they were largely viewed as plumbing for crypto exchanges. Useful if you happened to be trading digital assets, but hardly something that would interest mainstream finance.
Fast forward to today and the picture looks rather different.
Visa has been experimenting with stablecoin settlement.
Mastercard has launched initiatives around tokenised payments.
Stripe has embraced stablecoin infrastructure after years away from the crypto sector.
PayPal has introduced its own stablecoin.
Circle continues to position USDC as enterprise payment infrastructure rather than simply another crypto asset.
None of these organisations are trying to replace existing payment systems overnight.
They're solving rather mundane problems.
Cross-border settlement.
Programmable payments.
Reducing friction.
Improving liquidity.
The technology is becoming valuable precisely because it's becoming invisible.
That's usually a sign that something has started growing up.
Tokenisation Might Be the Real Story
Bitcoin will always dominate headlines because price movements make good television.
Tokenisation, on the other hand, is rather less glamorous.
Which is probably why it's more interesting.
The basic idea isn't particularly complicated.
Instead of representing value through paper records or central databases, represent ownership digitally on a shared ledger.
That ownership could be almost anything.
Government bonds.
Property.
Private equity.
Carbon credits.
Loyalty points.
Identity credentials.
Even intellectual property.
BlackRock's increasing interest in tokenised assets isn't driven by a sudden desire to become a crypto exchange. It's driven by operational efficiency.
If assets become programmable, settlement becomes faster.
Transfers become simpler.
Ownership becomes easier to verify.
Processes that currently involve layers of intermediaries can become significantly more streamlined.
Enterprise architects should recognise the pattern.
This isn't really about cryptocurrency.
It's about digital representation of value.
Blockchain Is Finally Finding Enterprise Use Cases
One criticism levelled at blockchain over the past decade was that nobody could explain why a distributed ledger was genuinely necessary.
That criticism was often fair.
Many projects appeared to begin with blockchain before identifying a problem worth solving.
Thankfully, that seems to be changing.
Rather than asking where blockchain can be forced into an existing process, organisations are asking where shared trust between multiple parties genuinely creates value.
Trade finance.
Supply chain verification.
Cross-border payments.
Digital identity.
Settlement.
Asset custody.
These aren't particularly exciting dinner party conversations.
They're also worth billions of pounds.
JPMorgan's Kinexys platform (formerly Onyx) is a perfect example.
This isn't a startup attempting to disrupt banking.
It's one of the world's largest banks modernising how banking itself operates.
That feels like a much stronger signal than another meme coin reaching an improbable valuation.
Regulation Has Changed the Conversation
For years, regulation was portrayed as crypto's greatest enemy.
Reality has proved rather more nuanced.
Serious institutions don't generally invest billions into technology that exists in regulatory limbo.
Frameworks such as Europe's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) have arguably done something quite important.
They've reduced uncertainty.
Not everyone welcomed that.
Speculators rarely enjoy additional oversight.
Enterprises usually do.
Predictable rules create confidence.
Confidence attracts investment.
Investment builds infrastructure.
Infrastructure supports adoption.
It's hardly revolutionary.
It's simply how mature industries develop.
AI and Crypto Might Become Unexpected Partners
One area I think remains significantly under-discussed is the relationship between AI and digital assets.
Much of the conversation around AI focuses on content generation or automation.
Fair enough.
But increasingly we're moving towards autonomous software agents capable of making decisions and interacting with external systems.
Eventually those agents may need to exchange value.
Pay for APIs.
Purchase compute.
Acquire datasets.
License software.
Negotiate contracts.
Humans aren't particularly good at managing millions of tiny machine-to-machine transactions.
Programmable digital money, however, starts looking surprisingly attractive.
I'm not suggesting we'll all have AI assistants wandering around buying coffee with Bitcoin.
The more plausible future is considerably less dramatic.
An AI agent settles a tiny licensing fee.
Another purchases temporary compute capacity.
A third pays for access to a specialist dataset.
Nobody notices.
The transaction simply happens.
That's considerably more interesting than another debate about whether Bitcoin reaches a particular price target.
Enterprise Architects Should Watch the Plumbing
Technology history has a habit of rewarding those who pay attention to infrastructure rather than headlines.
The web wasn't built because browsers became colourful.
It was built because protocols matured.
Cloud computing succeeded because virtualisation, networking and automation became dependable.
Crypto appears to be reaching a similar stage.
The interesting innovations are increasingly happening below the user interface.
Interoperability.
Identity.
Settlement.
Programmability.
Cross-chain communication.
Governance.
Those aren't particularly glamorous words.
They are, however, exactly the sort of things that determine whether technologies survive beyond the hype cycle.
As architects, that's where our attention probably belongs.
Final Thoughts
I don't know whether Bitcoin will double in value over the next five years.
Equally, I don't know whether it will halve.
To be honest, I'm not sure it's the most interesting question anymore.
The more important question is whether the financial infrastructure surrounding us quietly becomes more programmable, more interoperable and more automated.
Because that's already happening.
Banks are experimenting.
Payment providers are investing.
Governments are exploring digital currencies.
Asset managers are tokenising traditional investments.
The conversation has shifted from replacing finance to modernising it.
That feels like genuine progress.
Perhaps the greatest irony is that crypto's long-term success may arrive precisely when people stop talking about crypto altogether.
When buying a house takes minutes rather than weeks.
When international payments settle almost instantly.
When ownership transfers become frictionless.
When digital identity is portable and verifiable.
Most people won't care what technology sits underneath.
Nor should they.
Just as we rarely think about the protocols carrying our web traffic today, tomorrow's financial infrastructure may simply become another invisible layer of the digital economy.
And perhaps that's the ultimate measure of success for any technology.
Not that everybody notices it.
But that eventually, nobody has to.
The question is no longer whether cryptocurrency will replace traditional finance.
It's whether traditional finance is quietly becoming programmable - and whether we've noticed it happening.
